Day 21: Eden, UT - Moab, UT

Day 21: Eden, Utah - Moab, Utah (Arches National Park)

Saturday, November 7th. We are on our way to Arches National Park today but have to straighten up Chateau Burke, stop at the Ogden City Cemetery and can't leave without seeing Cassidy and Eylan. My Great Niece and Great Great Nephew / Mom's Great Granddaughter and Great Great Grandson... can you wrap your brain around that one??? Oh and Cassie is Ashley's sister... now you got it. We met up with Cassie and Eylan around 11am for a late breakfast. Cassie is very busy working at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City and teaching Yoga classes. Eylan is in 3rd grade, loves to play soccer, bike, snowboard, etc... and looks like a serious skater boy.

We drove by the house on Mitchell Drive that Mom and Dad built in 1955 and I lived until the 3rd grade. Mom also really wanted to stop by the Ogden City Cemetery to visit her Mother's grave site, Cora Carver Ritchie, however, she couldn't quite remember what avenue the graves were located. We wandered through several blocks looking for the marker. Luckily, there were a couple of city employees doing some landscaping and they were able to go to the cemetery office and look up the records. We paid our respects at the "Ritchie" marker where Mom's Polygamist Grandfather James D. Ritchie was buried along with his three wives. The third wife was Mom's Grandmother Rachel... interesting. Then we found Mom's Father, also James D. Ritchie and buried on either side, Cora Carver Ritchie and D. Hermine Ritchie, Mom's Step-Mother. It was really good for Mom to be able to visit the cemetery.

Back on the road about 2pm... headed through Salt Lake City, Provo on I-15 and made the turn towards Price on Hwy. 6 over Soldier Summit which is a huge hunting and snowmobile area. Again, we saw wind generators set up and spinning for energy... so good to see... we should have them in the Keys. Because of our late start, we arrived Moab in the dark. I kept telling Drew that I wished he could see how pretty it was... we got to see the next day.

We drove 272 miles today... we liked the Spanish Trails RV Park on the south end of Moab. We're planning to stay two nights.

  1. There's some talk about maybe putting wind turbines on Boot Key. I think they're very graceful and wouldn't mind looking at them.

  2. I have been a teacher in the LDS Church most of my life, serving on both the Stake and Ward levels. Every year around July 24, I tell my favorite pioneer story of The Wooden Doll, written by Cora Carver Ritchie. Truly, I love this little story and appreciate Cora, the author, for sharing this, yet long ago. This was published in The Instructor 1932, Vol. 67, Page 596(?). I told this story a couple of weeks ago to my 8 and 9-year-olds who were spell-bound in silence. It is such a touching story of a little girl named Sarah. Often I've wished I had a picture of Sarah and/or her wooden doll. Would you happen to have one? I'd appreciate hearing from you.
